چکیده

This paper provides ready-to-use equations to describe variations in uranium-series (U-series) disequilibrium as a function of elemental distribution coefficients, melting porosity, melting rate, and melting time. The effects of these melting parameters on U-series disequilibria are quantitatively evaluated in both an absolute and relative sense. The importance of net elemental fractionation and ingrowth of daughter nuclides are also described and compared in terms of their relative contributions to total U-series disequilibrium. In addition, we compare the production of U-series disequilibrium during mantle melting to trace element fractionations produced by melting in a similar context. Trace element fractionations depend externally on the degree to which a source is melted, whereas U-series disequilibrium depends upon both the degree and rate of melting. In contrast to previous models, our approach to modeling U-series disequilibrium during dynamic melting collapses simply to a description of trace element behavior during dynamic melting when the appropriate decay terms are omitted. Our formulation shows that extremely small degrees of melting, sometimes called upon to explain observed extents of U-series disequilibrium, are not always required. Dehydration and partial melting in subduction zones: Constraints from U-series disequilibria

We present a critical reappraisal of U-series data from arc volcanoes to constrain slab dehydration and melting processes using a global subduction zone data set. There is no clear evidence for significant mobilization of Th or Pa in dehydration fluids while the source region of arc rocks is relatively oxidized and mobility of U is strongly enhanced. It is argued that along-arc U/Th and U/Pa is...

The influence of source heterogeneity on the U–Th–Pa–Ra disequilibria in post-glacial tholeiites from Iceland

We investigate the relative influence of mantle upwelling velocity and source heterogeneity on the melting rates recorded by Th–U, Pa–U and Ra–Th disequilibria in post-glacial tholeiites from Iceland’s main rift areas. The measured (Th/U) ratios range from 1.085 to 1.247, the (Pa/U) ratios from 1.333 to 1.925, and the (Ra/Th) ratios from 0.801 to 1.218. A general positive correlation between Th...

U-series isotopic disequilibrium produced during experimental melting of granitic crust: Implications for shallow-level assimilation and pluton remobilisation

Although the production of U-series disequilibria during metasomatic and partial-melting processes in Earth’s mantle is well studied, the effects of melting and assimilation processes during ascent and storage of magma in the crust are less well understood. To investigate disequilibria arising via this mechanism, we have conducted U-series measurements on the products of laboratory experiments ...

Remelting of recently depleted mantle within the Hawaiian plume inferred from the Ra–Th–U disequilibria of Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption lavas

Lavas from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption of Kīlauea Volcano are thought to partially bypass the shallow magma reservoir beneath the volcano's summit, and thus, provide a relatively direct “window” to the mantle. Here we use high-precision U-series isotope measurements of Puʻu ʻŌʻō lavas (1985–2001) to investigate the timing and mechanism of melt transport within the Hawaiian mantle plume. The lavas di...
